Whether you are planning to thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), section-hiking, a beginning or experienced backpacker, a day-hiker or just love to hike here are some helpful links:
Some nice apps: All Trails, eTrails, Guthook's Hiking Guides (expensive but worth every penny), Halfmile
California Campfire/Stove Permit (You will need to check with the area you are visiting to see if fires/cooking is allowed and if so is a permit required. If it is this is an easy way to get the permit.)
Gear Grams: Great tool for see really what is making up your pack weight and adjusting it.
Pacific Crest Trail Association (If you plan to hike on the PCT you should be a member... it's the right thing to do!)
Halfmile Maps (This guy has spent a lot of time making maps and GPS way-points available for free... it's awesome!)
Trail Journals is a great way to read others accounts of their life on the trail and preparation for it.
Post Holer's Website has a lot of information and journals and is a nice resource.
Here are several water related resources: Water Report, Water Issues, Water Cache Problems (I also want to put a little note here about AsABat who was a very dedicated provider of water reports, he sadly passed on doing what he loved, backpacking. The site he maintained was AsABat's Water Report)
Elevation Profile by BearCant is a nice little tool to use.
Annual Day Zero PCT Kick Off (ADZPCTKO) is the thing to do if you are pondering hiking all or part of the Pacific Crest Trail. It is a nice place to go to learn about gear and strategies from other hikers who are doing the trail and have done the trail, it's also nice to just be around like-minded people.
PCT Trail Days This is a lot like ADZPCTKO as mentioned above but it is in Cascade Locks, OR. A lot of gear, fun and you get to meet with a lot of hikers who are just about one state away from finishing their journey thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail!
Backpacking and Hiking for Beginners. Are you new to hiking and backpacking? Saw the movie Wild or A Walk in the Woods and want to get out there yourself? I was provided this link from a scout troop.
Leave No Trace A way to leave no, to very little, impact when you hike and backpack so others behind you can have the same wild experience you did.
John Muir Trail information.
Tahoe Rim Trail information.
